NOMAD046: Treetops McPhoenix
My good god. This is one of the most wonderfully strange things I have ever heard. I can’t even begin to describe it. From Treetops himself:
An extremely eclectic mix which has the audacity to combine yodelling with Neue Deutsche Welle, modern classical with Ghanaian tribal music, and dark cabaret with BBC sporting theme tunes.
The whole thing is held together with samples related to the tragic children’s television presenter Mark Speight. The particular arrangement of these clips (from TV show SMart and various news broadcasts about his death) is intended to emphasise both the sadness and absurdity of his story. While simple things like the timing or juxtaposition of samples may invite the listener to laugh at what they are hearing, hopefully by the end of the mix you will come to appreciate that the primary motivation for using Mark Speight in this way is a desire to pay tribute to an evidently nice bloke who was forced to play the lead role in a drama every bit as tragic and affecting as the work of Shakespeare or Sophocles.
